Excavations in the Area of Mithymnos

Mithymna, an ancient village and now former municipality on the Greek island of Lesbos, is situated on the northern coast of this small island and is located at a distance of three kilometers from the mainland. As of July 2020 it has been taken over by the municipality of Larnaca, which is located on the south-eastern Aegean islands.

The archaeological remains found in the area of Mithymnos have been found in various excavation sites and are mostly associated with the Hellenistic period. The first evidence that was found was a Roman coin found in the area of Mithymnios. This coin shows that Mithyrhinos was a native of Pontus and the city of Sparta. It is said that he was a governor of Pisidia in Lycia (modern-day Israel).

The second archaeological evidence that was found there dates back to the late classical period. During that period there were excavations carried out by the Greek scholar, Xenocrates, who used his excavations as a means of educating his fellow Athenians. This is considered to be his most important contribution to the Athenian education. His excavations resulted in the discovery of a large settlement that was occupied during the late classical period and is now called Lycabrion.

The archaeological site at Lycabrion was excavated to determine if the settlement had been a home for the wealthy or a place that was used by the poor. In spite of this, the results showed that there was a sizable middle class at the site that lived in houses built according to the architectural style of that time. The houses that are still there are dated by archeologists to be around the eighth century B.C.

Another major breakthrough that was made by archeological excavations at Mithymnos was the discovery of the tomb of the archon of Egypt, Ptolemy Philetas, who is believed to be the first Greek monarch in the region. He is also considered the founder of Lycia and was buried in the city's temple of Zeus.

While this small site on the south-eastern Aegean island of Mytilini Molivos is very important, it is not the only one in this part of Greece. In fact, in recent years a lot of research has gone into the area to find out more about this ancient society and its origins, and the reasons why it was founded, because, in order to understand how this small island managed to achieve so much in such a short space of time.
