The House of Peristeron
"The House of Peristeron" by Corfu Ag. Ioannis Peristeron is a delightful story about the rise and fall of a Roman Emperor, Commodus, and his rise and fall into the throne of the Roman Empire. In addition to the history lesson that Peristeron provides, this is a story that is full of romance, intrigue, magic, intrigue, and mystery.
Commodus was born in the third century B.C. in what is now called Sirmium, in what was then known as Parthia, in modern day Iran. When he was still a young man, Commodus was a relative of Cleopatra, who was the queen of the Egyptian Pharoahs. As time went on and he became more powerful and wealthy, he was also able to acquire the throne of the Roman Empire for himself.
Commodus was married to Julia, and when she died, he was forced to flee to Egypt where he established his new capital, Jerusalem. There, he built a magnificent palace called the Temple of Jupiter Capitolinus, which is the first of the Seven Wonders of the World. In addition to building such a magnificent palace, Commodus also had to establish many other governmental and religious offices including a new government-owned mint and a new capital, Rome. Commodus did all these things, but it was not until he was in his late thirties that he would come to the throne. But that came too soon for those that had been hoping for a long and happy reign for Commodus.
During his early thirties, Commodus began a series of wars against those that supported his mother, Queen Numa Pompilius. Although he managed to get rid of them, the people of Italy became so jealous that they plotted to kill Commodus at a public gathering that was being held in the forum. For his part, Commodus was convinced that he was being sacrificed and decided to kill himself. For this reason, the Roman public mourned him for two weeks, during which time many priests performed sacrifices to appease the gods and appease the anger of the people. When Commodus finally returned from his death, he realized that he had made the wrong decisions.
In the aftermath of Commodus' death, a new man, Marcus Aurelius, took over the reins of power from Commodus and was able to restore order in the Roman Empire. After years of rule, Aurelius began a series of reforms which made the government run smoothly again, which was quite an accomplishment, given that Commodus had allowed the corrupt officials to run rampant. In his first year in office, he managed to put down the last of Commodus' enemies, the Praetorian Guard, which had killed Commodus' first wife, Cleopatra. Aurelius then sent several legions to the provinces to reestablish law and order, as well as a new Roman religion, which were a mix of religion and philosophy.
As it turns out, the main character of this story, Julian, a man that Aurelius had sent to Egypt to find Cleopatra, ends up finding his way back to his homeland. While he is doing so, he meets the beautiful Cleopatra. Julian is reunited with her after a journey that takes him through Persia and is able to persuade Cleopatra to marry him and give birth to the Roman Empire's first child, Alexander, whom she names as her husband's son.
